行動の予測が他者に対してではなく、自己に向けられたらどうでしょう？ 自分がどういう状況でどういう行動をするのか、そう考え始めたときにはじめて「自己」とか「意識」とかが生まれたのです。

あと心がどうして生まれたかについても興味深い話がありました。そもそも意識・心なんてものは生きていく上で必要ありません。ではなぜこんな心なんていう生きていく上で面倒な性質を獲得したのでしょうか。それはある適応的な能力が原因です。

つまり、他者の行動の予測です。その場しのぎで場当たり的に対応するよりも、事前に「相手はこういうときにはこういうことをしそうだ」と予測することは自己の生存に有利に働きます。狩りをする動物にとって獲物の行動を予めシミュレートすることは合理的でしょう。人間は一人で狩りをせず、仲間と共同で生活するので、同じ人間の行動を予測することは合理的です。そのように適応して当たり前といえます。

では、この行動の予測が他者に対してではなく、自己に向けられたらどうでしょう？　自分がどういう状況でどういう行動をするのか、そう考え始めたときにはじめて「自己」とか「意識」とかが生まれたのです。自分がどういう行動をするのか・どのように感じているのか、そういったことについて意識すること・考えること・予想すること、それこそが心なのです。

それは不幸にも自己の有限性にも気づいてしまうことでした。ただ本能のまま自然に動き出す身体には、圧倒的な世界のみが見えて、自己はどこにも見出せません。しかしひとたび自己に対して視線が向いてしまえば、大きな世界の中を這いつくばるみじめで小さな自己を発見してしまいます。え？　つーかおれ死ぬの？　マジかよ勘弁してくれよ。そういった死への恐怖も生まれます。永遠で広大な世界に対する、ちっぽけで儚い自己の精一杯な抵抗が宗教であり科学です。
